Developing and Implementing an
Outward Mindset


Content and Tools

In this workshop, participants learn the difference between inward and outward mindsets. They discover where they have been inward and how to turn more outward. They learn how to turn their mindsets and behaviors outward by applying the following tool sets:

Glasses Self-awareness tools—Four tools to overcome a self-focused inward mindset and more consistently work with an others-inclusive outward mindset.
Arrow Mindset change tools—Two tools to implement and sustain an outward mindset.
Pencil Accountability tools—Three accountability tools to help individuals clarify their roles and hold themselves accountable for their impact on others
Cycle Collaboration tools—Eight collaboration tools to help individuals and teams plan, work, and resolve differences more collaboratively and effectively.

Results and Outcomes

This course equips participants with tools that enable them to:

  • Understand the two mindsets and their implications on results
  • Assess the extent to which they are working with an inward mindset
  • Change their mindsets to become more outward
  • Re-conceive their jobs to make them more outward
  • Hold themselves more fully accountable
  • Report on performance in a way that keeps them working outward
  • Work in a way that is more collaborative, fulfilling, and effective
  • Positively influence others to change
  • Address and resolve conflicts

Who Should Attend

This course is appropriate for individuals who wish to:

  • Deepen their understanding of Arbinger’s principles and apply outward mindset tools in their own lives and work
  • Gain insight into the practical implications of Arbinger’s work within an organization
  • Investigate the value of deploying Arbinger within their organization or team to initiate a larger transformative process
  • Prepare to attend train-the-trainer courses to become an Arbinger facilitator within their employing organization

Format

This program is typically delivered in two consecutive days. Key concepts are taught through discussions led by an Arbinger-certified facilitator. The course is punctuated by videos, individual and group exercises, one-on-one sharing, and application of the tools to on-the-job situations facing the participants.

Content

This three-day intensive workshop equips participants with a deep understanding of core Arbinger material and its implications within organizations. Participants explore Arbinger’s application to a broad range of organizational issues and learn to deliver core concepts, frameworks, and tools to an organizational audience. Upon course completion, participants are prepared and certified to facilitate the Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset workshop within their organization per the standards in the Facilitator License Agreement.

This course is for employees of organizations who wish to deliver Arbinger material to other employees in the same organization. This course is not intended for independent consultants.


Results and Outcomes

Upon completion of this course and certification as an Arbinger facilitator, participants may deliver the Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset workshop for members of their employing organization.

Participants will learn to:

  • Facilitate Arbinger’s concepts and tools as elements of a complete framework in a logically coherent manner
  • Invite an outward mindset space for workshop participants
  • Deliver stories that compellingly illustrate Arbinger material
  • Positively influence others to change
  • Adopt an “internal consultant” approach to guiding an organization in implementing Arbinger material

Who Should Attend

This course is appropriate for individuals who:

  • Want to help lead the implementation of an outward mindset approach within their organizations
  • Want to deepen their understanding of outward mindset principles and strategies
  • Possess the following characteristics, which will make them ideally suited to successfully facilitate this program within their organizations:
    1. Credibility (high credibility with, and the respect of, the populations they would train)
    2. Charisma (interesting and engaging to listen to and learn from)
    3. Connection (naturally connects well with people)

Certification Process

Becoming a certified Arbinger facilitator for your organization involves the following three basic steps:

  1. Fulfill prerequisites prior to the train-the-trainer course
  2. Successfully complete the train-the-trainer course
  3. Sign the Facilitator License Agreement for this program

As a certified Arbinger facilitator, you will be responsible for overseeing the purchase of appropriate course materials for those you train in your organization.


Prerequisites

This workshop is an advanced program that explores the breadth and depth of our groundbreaking work. We ask that you come prepared to deepen your understanding of Arbinger material, explore its application to your personal and work lives, and adopt an outward mindset approach to delivering the material.

The following prerequisites must be completed before attending this train-the-trainer course:

  • Attend a Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset workshop
  • Read both Leadership & Self Deception and The Outward Mindset
  • It is helpful but not required to read The Anatomy of Peace

Ongoing Support

The purchase of an Arbinger train-the-trainer program includes exclusive access to several resources intended to help facilitators continue developing themselves and implement and sustain outward mindset ways of working in their organizations. Resources include:

  • Facilitator Support Helpline—Receive one-on-one coaching to prepare for and debrief after workshops. Available 9am-5pm MST, Monday-Friday.
  • Arbinger Portal—Access podcasts, evaluation forms, facilitator development videos, recordings of the Monthly Global Facilitator Calls, screen casts of master facilitators delivering outward mindset material, and more.
  • Monthly Global Facilitator Calls—Continue developing facilitation skills by participating in these best-practice conversations with other facilitators and Arbinger master facilitators.
  • Arbinger’s Annual Summit and Facilitator Retraining—Receive exclusive invitations to this valuable event. Attend to learn new materials, retrain on core content, network, attend Q&A sessions, and hear from special guest speakers.

The public Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset train-the-trainer workshop is $3900 per participant. Special pricing is available for federal government agencies with GSA purchasing capability.

These prices do not include the cost of materials for trainings delivered by certified facilitators within their organizations after completion of this course. Participant materials are required for each person trained, but must be purchased separately.


Licensing and Certification

Upon successful completion of the train-the-trainer course and signature of the Facilitator License Agreement, you will be certified to deliver the Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset workshop material in your employing organization. The Facilitator License Agreement outlines the scope of delivery, including what material you may use and the per-participant cost of training materials.

Note: In the event of employment termination or a change of company, you are not automatically certified to deliver Arbinger material in your new organization. You will need to complete a new Facilitator License Agreement with Arbinger.

Reminder: This course is for employees who will be delivering the Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset workshop within their organization. This course is not for independent consultants, coaches, or other external organizational development service providers.
