Defining Mindset and the Basics of Arbinger’s Work
Welcome to the First Step in Changing Your Mindset!
Grounded in the principles taught in both Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box and The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict. Arbinger has developed a new and intuitive way to teach its principles, through the medium of MINDSET.
Put simply, your mindset is the lens through which you see your work, your relationships, and your entire world. It is at the foundation of all that you do, and more importantly how you do it.
Hence when training people, if we don’t look to change the fundamental mindset they posses, then our efforts to correct behavior will fail to give us the desired results.
Many other training systems work to correct behavior, attacking the symptoms of a much deeper disease. While treating symptoms might bring temporary relief, only finding the cure to the root cause will bring sustainable long-term solutions. Arbinger offers the solution through a program called “Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset”
There are essentially two different Mindsets that people have at any given time. The first is called the Inward Mindset, the second is called the Outward Mindset:
The Inward Mindset is a focus only on one’s own personal goals and objectives, without consideration for the impact or the results of their behavior on others. This mindset is blind to what others need, and is therefore prone to creating conflict, and even frustrating the results the entire organization might otherwise be able to achieve. Most organizational issues arise because the Inward Mindset dominates, blinding the members of that organization to their true potential, and creating disunity. Think about it; can an organization achieve its best results if its individual members are not focused on those outcomes? Most people stuck in this mindset have no idea they are even there. They can be creating problems within an organization and not even know it. In fact they could feel as though they are doing good work and making real contributions, and yet be frustrating the organization. They even resist any suggestion that they are potentially the problem.
What’s needed is a change in Mindset.
When individuals and organizations make the change to the Outward Mindset, incredible things start to happen. The Outward Mindset is focused on the objectives and results of the organization as a whole. It seeks to be helpful, responsible, and make a real impact. It helps individuals see how they might be creating obstacle in the work of others, and helps them change the way they are working and relating to their team members in a way that creates real and sustainable results. Because the Outward Mindset helps cure the deeper disease of any organization, its effects are dramatic and fast acting. Change happens quickly as people choose to change their Mindset.
